Repurposing Dad’s Diamonds for a Unique Pendant

This client and her family had been coming to me for years. Her mother was a Cracker Jack of a person. Unfortunately she is no longer with us. But her jewelry is. However, this particular ring belonged to this client’s father. It had been kept in a safety deposit box for as long as I have known her. It’s massive – far too large for any of them to wear. She loves necklaces, though. Plus she works with her hands, so a pendant would be a perfect way to restyle this piece for daily use. For her initial visit we discussed the possibility of a pear-shaped pendant, setting the three diamonds the same way they had been set in the ring but this would have resulted in a pendant that was as massive as the original piece. The first thing was to get the stones out of their bulky mounting. We had to cut it in half to release the European-cut diamond in the center. We then removed the beads to unseat the smaller diamonds. We decided to keep it simple, light and airy with movement so the stones could twinkle and sparkle in the light. Setting the diamonds in four-prong wire baskets with links was the way to go so that each would dangle from one to the other. We went with a simple bail for a chain. And voila! This was the perfect pendant for this client. Her smile said it all!
