he left us suddenly and unexpectedly, doing what he loved. she has chosen to honor their unending love with a redesigned ring that joins his wedding band to her original engagement ring.
i had the honor to know this couple for a very long time. when he was ready to propose, he came to me to help him select the perfect diamond and setting. he chose well – a beautiful CanadaMark diamond. the particular stone he picked out has the Canadian maple leaf engraved on the girdle (circumference) of the diamond. it is not a huge stone but, wow, what a beauty!
Canadian stones are from new mines and tend to have high color and clarity. some mines even issue a dossier with the date of the stone’s discovery and the carat weight before and after cutting.
the original engagement ring was elegantly simple in design – a four prong wire basket setting, with the only decoration being Celtic knots on either side of the diamond.
combined and redesigned
we needed to retain elements of the original wedding set, so the Celtic knots have been appliquéd to his original wedding band which we cut into a bypass design to create the feeling of the diamond being hugged by the band. we set the diamond into a bezel so she could wear it every day without worrying about prongs failing. we removed the Florentine finish (decorative crosshatching) and polished the band bright.
she slipped the new band onto her finger with a smile on her face and love in her eyes. i got chills just being there. she will wear this ring on her other hand every single day – a beautiful poetic tribute to her husband and a touching visual symbol of a connection that transcends heartbreak.
- his and hers redesigned combined wedding & engagement ring: 14k white gold band with a 14k white gold bezel for the CanadaMark™ diamond. the Celtic knots are 14k as well.
