These clients were referrals and lovely ones at that consisting of three granddaughters – two sisters and their cousin spread across the Northeast. From our very first interaction it was clear as day that they were three peas in a pod. They came to me with their beloved Nana’s original wedding set – a classic platinum solitaire ring and a matching wedding band, both with a beautiful embossed heart pattern on them. While the engagement ring didn’t have a stone, there was  an envelope with three European-cut diamonds. There was also a separate double pearl ring with tiny diamond accents that one of the granddaughters absolutely loved. The three granddaughters sourced some images of a bypass style that they all liked and agreed they’d like me to update all three rings in that style. The challenge was to create three individual rings, expressing each of their personalities. The diamonds were much easier to distribute. It was unanimously agreed that the larger of the three would go to the oldest granddaughter. The two other stones were much the same size.  Beginning with the pearl ring, the suggestion was to remove one of the pearls as well as the setting. We added a four-prong low-base setting to hold the diamond as well as add an “outline” of yellow gold. The  engagement ring was the most straight forward change. We simply reset the largest of the diamonds into the six-prong setting and added the yellow gold bypass. The challenge was to size the platinum ring up three sizes while preserving the heart pattern. The wedding band was a bit more complicated than the other two as there was more fabrication needed. The band needed to be cut for a six-prong setting to be assembled into it. This was further complicated by the original engraving inside the ring. I wanted to preserve that as well as the heart pattern. Next the setting was off set onto the wedding band. The 3 mm bypass ring that was added curled around the stone. This ended up being an enjoyable and interesting project. The granddaughters loved the end results, honoring their Nana’s legacy while capturing each of their unique personalities. Their Nana would be thrilled.
