While chatting about a purchase, she mentioned that she wanted to get her husband a diamond ring to celebrate their anniversary in the fall. She knew what stone shape she wanted and was definite that this gift was to be a statement ring. We got started on the ring in late spring when she came in to inquire about a minor adjustment to her engagement ring and a gift for a godmother. As it often happens, one thing led to another and the fun began to design a special man’s ring.

Her thought process is very deliberate. She asks questions and offers suggestions as to what she sees in her mind. She is very romantic and wanted to convey just how special he is to her. We exchanged many emails and met in person several times in the shop. I was thrilled to be the guide, the interpreter, and the expert to bring her vision to fruition.

First find the right diamond

I acquired several nice-sized stones, all certified by an independent laboratory, the best known being GIA. The stone that spoke first to her was larger than she originally envisioned. She came in with her other half; and they both loved the stone that spoke to her first, which is so often the case.

Ultimately the chosen stone was a 1.70 carat emerald cut diamond.

This is a couple who have a lot of fun together. It is apparent that not only are they crazy about each other but really enjoy each other’s company, and that extends to whoever might be in their presence. It was so much fun to be part of their joy. And with two small children, love and life are readily apparent.

I suggested we take our inspiration from Art Deco due to the emerald cut diamond and tweaked several images she sent me of rings on line. I also advised we use a platinum bezel, as the metal will not leach an color into the stone. The final ring is 14k yellow gold with solid shoulders.

The engraving reads “ red wine carpet stains”, on the ring shoulder is an inside joke from when they were first courting. Her husband has written it on the wall of their bedroom. And so at her request, is included as part of a very special gift.

I adore this family. This project was challenging – and like many long-term projects, frustrating at times – but the end result was exactly what had been envisioned and reflects their life view!
