Grandma’s Diamonds and a Beautiful Newport Proposal

This lovely young man reached out to me via email because he wanted to have a custom engagement ring made for his soon-to-be fiancé. The most important element was incorporating diamonds from both of his grandmothers. He was originally from the area but had since moved south where he met his Georgia peach! He had his folks bring in the diamonds, since they’re still local. I began doodling some design ideas for him, although I did not know what the shape or size of the center stone was to be just yet. So the initial sketches had a blank center. We corresponded in a mix of phone calls and emails, delivering the most personalized service, and I was able to guide him with the purchase of the center diamond just as I would have done if he was to come in-person to the shop. Once he purchased the stone, he shipped it to his folks and his dad brought it directly to my shop. It is a beautiful marquise diamond, natural stone, K color and SI1 in clarity. It has fabulous proportions so it sparkles all day long! Nana Jane had the larger brilliant cut diamond so I needed to match that stone and we decided to go with a lab grown in order to be mindful of the overall budget. Nana Lucille’s diamonds are diamond melee and are channel set into the shoulders, a quiet reminder of family continuity. The marquise diamond is set in a platinum crown, the rest of the ring is 14k white gold. The inside of the shank is marked with LG to indicate which side the lab grown diamond in on. Being the romantic and family-oriented kind of man he is, he planned to introduce her to his family and then head up to Newport for a special weekend in Newport, RI. Which is precisely where he planned to propose. The weather cooperated with blue skies and sunshine as if just for them. But what made it all the more perfect was indicated by his kind words… she said, “Yes!”

  • Materials: 14k white gold, natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds
  • Client location: The Carolinas

Kind Words: We had a beautiful day in Newport and right around sunset I asked the big question and she said, “Yes!” She absolutely loves the ring and it looks so beautiful on her hand. Thank you for everything you did to help me through this process. You were very personable and made me feel very comfortable and safe trusting you with family stones and the crafting of a new irreplaceable family heirloom. I can’t wait to work with you again! Thank you again for this, she looks absolutely stunning with the ring.
