simply listening is how I begin to design for you
I am constantly humbled by the family stories and adventures shared in my studio. I am thrilled that I can provide a safe space to meet with you privately because, at long last, I have my own studio.
When designing to repurpose jewelry, I hear what is important to the wearer (you!). The piece may have been a gift, an inheritance or even a purchase. But something about it keeps you from wearing it. For a redesign, the best possible scenario (though not always possible) is to start with what is brought in – a band from a ring, a setting from a pendant, or stones from earrings, for example. I have designed many pieces that capture the spirit of the cherished heirloom but is actually a new item entirely. Many times I suggest a simple change, such as making a pendant into a ring or a ring into a necklace. Sometimes I provide a fresh eye, and all my customer needs is encouragement to wear the piece again with no change at all!
What I do is listen – to identify wants and needs, and it is a privilege to hear such wonderful and heartwarming stories. Because every piece of jewelry tells a story, and sometimes it is pure poetry.
a bit of background
I joined my father in his business in 1983 at the bottom of the totem pole. I sat next to him on the bench and learned my basic bench skills. i polished more rough castings than I really want to remember. However, I learned so much about the jewelry arts that I am able to talk to a goldsmith in their language, which only helps with proper design.
I have been involved with the jewelry industry for 34 years. I served on the board of Connecticut Jewelers, held the position of president for two terms. I had the honor of service on the board of Jewelers of America.
